Keys to Covering Dark Circles for a Natural Skin Finish

In a perpetual world of chaos and change (looks at 2020), It is nice to know we can rely on a few universal constants, like gravity, the speed of light and concealers creasing.

Less is definitely more when it comes to concealers and correctors, especially if you have a dry skin type, skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis or maturing skin. Applying copious amounts of a lighter shade of concealer under the eyes can emphasise lines, dry skin and create a lighter grey cast under the eyes, adding years to your face.

By prepping the skin with the right skincare products and using small amounts of corrector alone can dramatically improve the appearance of dark circles. Correctors work best in conjunction with concealers that match your skin’s colour and undertone.

Key points for concealing dark circles to a create a skin-like finish

  • Prep skin with skincare right for YOU and YOUR skin’s needs

  • Use a corrector strategically and sparingly over blue/purple areas to neutralise darkness

  • Use a medium-full coverage concealer sparingly on areas that need it. For most people, a dab on concealer in the inner corner,

  • Use a sparing amount of sheer-medium concealer 1-2 shades lighter over areas you wish to brighten and lift

  • Remove excess concealer/product from areas that have a tendency to crease of move. This usually includes the socket of the eye/crease area. Skin directly underneath the lower lash line and around smile lines (can be on the sides of the nose near the inner corner of your eyes or on the outer corner (crows feet).

  • Set with a light veil of powder using a small soft hair (natural or sythetic fibre) brush that isnt densely packed and has a nice bend and flexibility on the skin.

Key points for avoiding poorly concealed dark circles

  • Avoid using very light or pale concealers directly over dark circles. This will only lighten this area, giving it a grey appearance. Correctors and varying shades of concealer must be layered to neutralise, conceal and then brighten the eyes and face.

  • Avoid applying concealer to skin that has not yet been prepped with the right skincare products. Skincare not only helps with the appearance and application of makeup products, it also aids with the longevity and wear of makeup products layered on top.

  • Avoid layering products together and all at once. Allow a few minutes between each process / product for best results

  • Do not bake the skin directly around the eyes with a heavy dusting of face powder. This will dry out the skin, creating more lines and texture.
